WWII for the History Enthusiast

1. The Great Escape

We know they’re not all going to make it, but it doesn’t stop us from hoping they might pull it off.

2. The Bridge on the River Kwai

Obi-Wan Kenobi gets his priorities mixed up in Burma.  Stiff upper lip, and all that.

3. Stalag 17

It’s all fun and games in a Nazi POW camp…until it’s not.

4. Das Boot

You’ll never, ever, want to go in a sub after seeing this film.  One of the best and most riveting movies ever made.

5. Life is Beautiful

If you thought a tragicomedy about WWII wouldn’t work, then you were wrong.

6. Run Silent, Run Deep

In case Das Boot wasn’t enough to put you off submarines for life.

7. Saving Private Ryan

Spielberg’s iconic film, so realistic no TV channel will play the unedited version.

8. Schindler’s List

Because Spielberg wasn’t done with WWII.  Or Academy Awards.

9. The Pianist

A look at the Holocaust and destruction of Warsaw; you might not like Polanski, but this film is a masterpiece.

10. Mrs. Miniver

One lady and her stiff upper lip saves Britain.
